Choosing Camera Locations

The road safety camera network consists of fixed and mobile cameras distributed across Victorian roads.

The fixed camera network

A Fixed Camera Site Selection Committee, chaired by Victoria Police and made up of representatives from Victoria Police and the Department of Justice, assesses and recommends the locations of fixed road safety cameras in Victoria.  The Committee considers the crash history of a location compared to other locations, as well as factors such as engineering suitability (whether the camera can operate optimally at the selected location).

Cameras are not activated at a location until Site Acceptance Testing has been completed, confirming the location as suitable for a fixed road safety camera system.

Fixed camera locations are available on this website.

The mobile camera network

Mobile cameras are installed in unmarked vehicles parked on either side of the road. The cameras are rotated across approximately 2000 pre-approved locations. The updated list of pre-approved mobile camera locations (Excel, 135KB) is published on this website each month.

Mobile speed camera locations are assessed and approved by specialist traffic police. These locations must fall within one of the following categories:

  • there is a documented history of serious and major collision within the previous 3 years
  • it has been the subject of a validated complaint of excessive speed, for example, feedback from the general public
  • it has been identified by Victoria Police to be a speed-related problem site
  • proposed speed enforcement by non-camera devices has been deemed impractical or unsuitable.
