The following graphs detail the trends in fines for each of the five highway camera systems within the State of Victoria since each highway camera system began operation.
The pattern is the same for each system and shows that over time speeding offences reduce. This reflects that drivers change their behaviour over time to comply with the speed limit.
Try out our interactive motion chart which shows the comparative trends (requires Flash), or see below for information on the individual highway camera systems:

Trends in fines – CityLink

Notes:

- The infringement numbers reported in the July to September 2011 and October to December 2011 quarters may have been affected by the police association industrial action which took place from 30 September to 24 October 2011, causing delays in the processing of infringement notices for offences dated during those quarters

Why do we have red-light cameras?
Question
Why do some graphs show the graph line going up, but the trend line still going down?
Answer
The trend line represented is a line of best fit from the start of the data to the end. It is based on an average trend of the data. Therefore, even if the graph line has been increasing recently the average trend overall of the data can still be downward. The increase in the graph line would have to continue over a period of time to start influencing the trend back upwards.
