Did you know that heavy vehicles attract a higher penalty for exceeding the speed limit than other vehicles?
Trucks over 4.5 tonnes, truck and trailer combinations over 14.5 tonnes and buses with more than 12 seats are considered ‘heavy vehicles’ under the Road Safety Act 1986.
VicRoads has a database that holds details of all registered heavy vehicles. If a fixed or mobile camera detects a speeding vehicle, the VicRoads database is checked to ascertain if the vehicle is a registered heavy vehicle. If it is, an infringement is issued to the vehicle’s owner with the higher penalty.
Heavy vehicles are subject to harsher penalties when they break the speed limit, as the road safety risks associated with heavy vehicle speeding are much more severe than other vehicles.
More information on the definition of a heavy vehicle and the penalties for exceeding the speed limit in a heavy vehicle is available on the fines page of this website.
