The Minister for Police has commissioned the Road Safety Camera Commissioner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the road safety cameras affected by a software virus between 6 June 2017 and 22 June 2017.
The investigation will encompass all 280 fixed road safety cameras. To ensure public confidence in the Road Safety Camera System, Victoria Police will quarantine all infringements relating to these cameras during the relevant time period, pending the outcome of the Commissioner's investigation. Individuals affected by this issue can contact Civic Compliance Victoria on (03) 9200 8111 for information. While infringements may be on hold, the cameras are still capturing and recording infringements, so people cannot take this as an excuse to break the law.
The Commissioner will also provide advice to the Minister on the adequacy of the management and oversight of the road safety camera program.
The Department of Justice and Regulation can confirm that the virus has been successfully removed from all affected cameras as at 23 June 2017.
There is no evidence that this was the result of a cyber-attack.
