Revenue collected from road safety cameras is directed to the Better Roads Victoria Trust Account.
Funds from this Account are invested in important Victorian projects, including road construction and maintenance and road safety initiatives. These may include:
- road restoration
- road surface replacement
- improving roundabouts
- overtaking lanes
- bridge strengthening.
In the 2016-17 financial year, fines issued from road safety cameras amounted to around $323.3 million. This figure represents just a fraction of the overall cost of speed-related crashes.
The monetary cost of road trauma in Victoria is estimated to be more than $3 billion per year, the equivalent of about $1,400 per household.
